If I could give zero stars, I would. We had reservations last weekend. We get to the hotel and they are overbooked. The lady at the front desk told me it was my fault for booking (and paying for in advance) through a third party website. She told us to promptly cancel our online reservation, which we did. After much time and discussion, they agreed to walk us to another hotel nearby. But they didn’t pay for our stay there and that hotel was more than twice as expensive. The manager at the Hyatt said she couldn’t help me and that I would have to try and get the refund or difference from the third party website. That website (agoda) has been reluctant to say the least, because we cancelled the reservation at the direction of the Hyatt. Terrible customer service from both the hotel (though the manager was very pleasant) and the website. It absolutely ruined my first night in Des Moines as I was on the phone with one or the other for hours only to get no resolution to the matter.

This was the worst experience our family has ever had at a hotel. The Hyatt and Expedia had a miscommunication and lost our reservation and it took just shy of 2 hours to get checked in. We had originally booked an accessible 2 bed, 1 sofa room and were “upgraded” to a 1 bed, 1 sofa room. To remedy our check-in issues, they gave us free validated parking, but the lot was full and we had to find street parking anyway. Breakfast was locked behind the front desk and you had to pay for anything that wasn’t apple or orange juice. We understanding that COVID has changed how breakfast is served, however the set-up was strange. For the price point of the Hyatt, we were disappointed about the service and quality of the hotel. The employees are just trying their best - it is obviously an upper management issue that needs to be remedied.

Do not stay here. Ever. There is a reason there is no information about parking on their website, it doesn’t exist. This is an 8 floor hotel with maybe 20 available parking spaces in a parking ramp across the street, that you can’t get into without the someone at the front desk pressing a garage opener. And they want to charge you $18 a night for it! Asked the front desk about parking when I checked in, they failed to tell me about how to get in or the lack of parking spaces. Ended up having to park 3 blocks away in public pay garage. Rooms are dated, bed is uncomfortable. Pull out bed is unusable. Only one elevator, plan on waiting for an extended period of time with your bags, because there is no one available to help you with them. Street noise is very loud from cars racing around until 1AM.

Recent reviews are on point. They must be short-staffed right now, because this hotel was kind of a disaster. The room felt grungy. The carpets were badly stained with mysterious bright blue substance, and there was hair all over the bathroom when we arrived. We requested towels in the morning and were told it would be a few minutes. We called down 5 hours later and were told the same thing. Another 2 hours later, I went down to the desk and got towels. It was obvious that there was only one person staffing the desk/service at a time. They were also responsible for hitting the parking garage button to let guests in and out, and they didn't always see you waiting at the gate, which meant running back and forth across the street to alert them. If there was no parking in the valet spots you could park on the 5th floor, but you couldn't access the elevator or stairs in the garage to go back up for your car later, so you have to walk all the way up through the garage floors. The staff were very nice and were clearly trying hard despite being expected to be everywhere at once, so I have to assume this is a failure on Hyatt's part. The hotel was full, it needs to be staffed appropriately and given some attention.

They got 3 stars on arrival on Sunday and 1 for the second night's stay making the average 2. The unprofessional service to address a problem with room key mechanisms was a low point in my global Hyatt experience. With their solution being to wait for the guest to return to the property at 10pm and then telling them they must change rooms without having a room picked out (making them wait in the lobby at the end of the evening while you fumble awkwardly with the res system - is that really what you want to do?) and without any compensation offered for the inconvenience is simply unacceptable. With this as my total experience (first and only stay) at this property, I know there are other more attentive hotels nearby. Ive stayed at them.. The staff on Monday night, June 14th, 2021, was totally incapable of recovering from a disruption without maximizing guest inconvenience. It may be the policy based on what they are saying, so you have been warned. We who travel frequently recognize that stuff happens but what separates preferred properties from those to avoid is how they recover the positive in a guest's experience, even when things go wrong. The property in Des Moines hasn't quite figured that out yet. By the way, I would ask them to please establish a dress code for front desk staff. A T-Shirt and athletic shorts scream YMCA, not Hyatt. This actually happened.
